Jeffrey Johnston was an Architect, Artist and beloved Professor of Architecture and Architectural History at Alfred State College. In addition to influencing scores of young architects, Jeff founded the Sorrento Study Abroad program at Alfred State. His hope was the experience for students would be as impactful to them as studying in Rome was to his own life. In his words:
“While in college, I had the opportunity to travel throughout Italy and Europe with the University of Notre Dame Rome Studies Program. Nine months in Rome etched a deep and lasting impression and in 1975 I began to document my recollections of that experience. Through drawing, I attempt to portray the heroic, architectonic character of public ceremonial space and to expose the underlying geometric order that pervades mankind’s built work. By utilizing layering, spherical perspective and a vertiginous station point I hope to convey a sense of the totality and visual order of a space and to suggest the movement of the viewer above, around and through.”
